Residents stage protest against proposed Ganderbal ring road

SRINAGAR : Scores of residents of Ganderbal district stages protest against the National Highway Authority (NHA) of India for forcing them to provide land for road widening at press enclave in Srinagar.

The protesters said that the land is for their agriculture purpose besides their residential houses are also situated there.

They alleged that the government is deliberately trying to pass the proposed Ring Road through their horticulture and residential land. They said that it will hit their livelihood adding that there are many alternatives available before the government to pass the ring road.

The protesters said that there are many areas affected due to the new road which includes, Pati Shalbugh, Dab, Gaamvera, Wakoora, Kurhama, Baroo, Wandhama, Repora, Lar, Watlar, Benhama and Manigam.

Protesters said, “Most of the Horticulture land through Wakoora and Kurhama is hit by the proposed Ring Road”.

They also said that the road widening also hits many mosque and even grave yards. They said that they government have failed to macadamisation of roads which are in dilapidated conditions Adding that “Let them fix existing roads first”.

They said that the road from Sumbal to Manigam which is in the same area sans attention since 2006.

“If the already existing bypass roads are maintained and macadamized then there is no need of this ring road,” Mohd Shafi Bhat a protester said.

It is Pertinent to mention that the most of the people whose residential houses are hit by the proposed ring road are not having any alternate land available for their residential purposes.

When asked, Deputy Commissioner Ganderbal, Tariq Hussain Ganaie told PTK that he is too busy in the meeting to comment on the issue.
