Students stages protest, clashes with forces in Srinagar

SRINAGAR : As colleges and universities opened on Monday after a week in the Kashmir Valley, students of Sri Pratap Higher Secondary College (SP College) clashed with the security forces and resorted to stone pelting.

Reports said that tension broke out after a group of students assembled on the Maulana Azad Road and started pelting stones on security forces, causing blockade of one of the busiest roads in Srinagar.

Hundreds of student protesters shouted “We want freedom” and “Go India, go back” as they fought with security forces after taking to the streets in the city Srinagar.

Police resort to tear gas shelling and water canon to disperse the protesters. The clashes last for several hours resulting into the injuries to several protesters and policemen.

Reports said that few students were also detained by the police when they were pelting stones adding that three photojournalists and eight policemen were injured with stones. The clash between the students and security forces created panic in the city besides affects the normal work. However in the evening situation were normal.

Earlier the authorities suspended teaching work in the colleges for few days as a precautionary measure.
