SRINAGAR: Kashmir Valley observed shutdown on 3rd consecutive day Tuesday against Shopian killings even as authorities imposed restrictions in parts of Srinagar and south Kashmir. While as the 22-year-old youth namely Gowhar Ahmad Rather who was injured critically at Kangan area of central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district yesterday, succumbed to injuries today afternoon.
Reports of clashes were received from Kangan and its adjoining areas soon after the news about the death of Gowhar spread in the area.
Three youth sustained injuries in government forces action during the clashes in Kangan. The trio was immediately taken to nearby hospital where from all of them referred to Srinagar hospital for advanced treatment.
The injured have been identified as Abdul Rashid khan son of Ghulam Qadir (left arm pellet injury), Irfan son of Abdul Rehman of Kangan (head and eye injuries due to pellets) and Aamir Ahmad Lone son of Abdul Hamid Lone of Chitergul Kangan (Head injury).
The condition of Amir is said to be critical and is being operated at SKIMS Soura while as the Abdul Rashid has been admitted at Bone and Joint Hospital Barzullah, Srinagar and Irfan to SMHS, Srinagar.
At least eight policemen and three para-military CRPF men also said to have received injuries during the stone throwing clashes in Kangan and its adjoining parts.
Meanwhile, reports of clashes were received from Goal Chowk Shopian, Memendar, Bunbazar Shopian, near MLA residence Shopian, Beerwah Budgam, Newa Pulwama and Nawabbaza Srinagar.
The Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL) had called for the Valley-wide shutdown to protests against killing of thirteen militants and four civilians.
Shops and business establishments remained closed in the entire Valley while public transport was off the roads due to the strike, reports quoting eyewitnesses said.
Also, to thwart the protests, authorities had put parts of Srinagar including Old City and Maisuma under strict restrictions.
Meanwhile, a complete shutdown was observed in Kishtwar district against the Shopian killings.
The strike call was issued by the Imam Jamia Masjid Kishtwar, Farooq Ahmed against the killings of four civilians in forces’ action in Shopian district on Sunday.
Majority of the business establishments and educational institutes owned by Muslims were closed while public transport remained largely off the roads.
However, the work in government offices and banks wasn’t affected by the strike call.
The schools and the colleges remained closed for the second consecutive day today on the orders of the government. Kashmir University had also postponed exams scheduled for these two days.
Train services also remained suspended for third consecutive day today.
A railway official here told GNS that train services were suspended and the decision was taken in wake of the apprehensions of law and order in the Valley.
When contacted director school Kashmir GN Ittoo said that the decision regarding opening or closing of schools has been left to the concerned Deputy Commissioners and they will take a decision accordingly. (GNS)
