SRINAGAR : A complete shutdown is being observed in Sopore town of north Kashmir’s Baramulla district on Sunday to mark the 26th anniversary of the 1993 massacre.
This day in 1993, BSF men fired indiscriminately in Sopore market and set ablaze shops and houses charring civilians to death. 57 civilians were killed and property worth crores gutted in fire.
Eyewitnesses said that hundreds of residents offered congregational Fateha in Masjids. Also civil society and trade members of Sopore gathered at martyrs grave yard here to offer special prayers to the departed souls.
Meanwhile, civil society held a peaceful protest really from Iqbal market to Main Chowk Sopore.
Reports said that police and CRPF soldiers armed with weapons are deployed in strength in the town to prevent eruption of protests.
Last year four policemen were killed on the Sopore anniversary after militants planted IED in the market aimed at ‘avenging’ killing of its top commander by forces. (PTK)
