Snowfall in upper reaches, rains in plains of Kashmir

Srinagar-Jammu national highway closed  

SRINAGAR: The upper reaches of Kashmir valley received a fresh snowfall while the plains witnessed rains on Wednesday.

A fresh snowfall occurred in Pahalgam, Gulamarg and other places in the upper reaches of the state during the last 24 hours. There was also fresh snowfall at Jawahar tunnel and Banihal.

Metrology department predicts bad weather conditions for the next two to three days. The MeT officials added that there is no chance of any major disruption anywhere due to bad weather during this period.

As per the MeT, Srinagar recorded 5.6 degree Celsius, Pahalgam 6.6, Gulmarg 24, Kargil 1.6, Jammu 2, Batote 30.2, Bannihal 24.2 and Bhaderwah 6.4 millimeters of rain/snow during the last 24 hours.

The minimum temperature recorded in Srinagar was 3.1 degrees Celsius, Pahalgam minus 0.2 and Gulmarg minus 3 on Wednesday, while it was minus 2.6 degree Celsius in Kargil and minus 6.1 in Leh town of Ladakh region.

Meanwhile, the Srinagar-Jammu national highway was closed yet again due to landslides and shooting stones, triggered by rain stones and fresh snow.

Official said that the traffic on the highway was suspended again since late last night due to bad weather conditions.

He said there were landslides and shooting stones between Ramban and Ramsu area at 0020 last night on the Srinagar-Jammu national highway forcing authorities to close the road.

The Border Roads Organisation (BRO), have already put machines and men into work to clear the landslides. “Intermittent rain is hampering the road clearance operation. No vehicle was allowed from Srinagar or Jammu this morning”, official said.

According to the traffic official the road will be resumed only after getting green signal from the BRO and traffic police officials posted  on the highway at different places.

Reports said that hundreds of vehicles, particularly empty trucks and oil tankers, have been stopped at Qazigund and other places on this side of the Jawahar tunnel due to closure of the highway.
