Ganderbal: Police on Tuesday lathi-charged protesters at Ganderbal, demanding commencement of work on various developmental projects in the district, which include the construction of a proper building for Central University, road widening, and the pending power project. The protest rally was led by the senior journalist from the area and Kashmir Media Network chief editor Sabir Ayoub.
According to eyewitnesses, the protest was organized by Development Forum Ganderbal, at the Beehama chowk and a sit-in was held.
They demanded that the power project promised two decades back still remains elusive, as no work was initiated by the government on the said project.
“Although Ganderbal has been declared a district, but road widening still stands a dream” protesters alleged.
They also said that the while Central University Kashmir was granted land for construction of the varsity no building has been constructed at the designated sites so far. These sites are located in between Tullamula, Kurhama, Barsoo, Zarugund and Wakura for student accommodation.
“We demand that government should at earliest commence works on the languishing projects that only adds to the trauma of the people in the district,” they claimed.
Police tried to pacify the protesters however were later baton charged and forced to move away from the road, that was blocked by them.
According to reports reaching here from Ganderbal, police later arrested Sabir Ayoub, who was leading the protest.
Meanwhile, protests erupted demanding the immediate release of Sabir who was later released from police station Ganderbal.(CNS)
