Srinagar : Amid COVID-19 strict lockdown and the first anniversary of Article 370 abrogation, authorities have detained scores of youth in different districts to “prevent any untoward incident” today.

With PDP and other regional parties having declared August 5 as “black day”, authorities have imposed curbs under COVID-19 lockdown in Srinagar and other towns of Kashmir.

District SPs of the valley confirmed to news agency KDC that they have taken several youth into “preventive detention” to prevent any untoward incident today.

“Those youth have been detained today morning who have adverse records like stone pelting or other related cases. They will be released in the evening as the day passes off peacefully,” police officials in Budgam, Baramulla, Ganderbal, Bandipora told news agency KDC.

Officials said that nearly 50 youth have been detained in Budgam, over 40 in Bandipora, more than 15 in Baramulla and 40 in Bandipora districts.

In south Kashmir, officials said that many youth suspected to be “miscreants and having adverse police record” have been detained to prevent protest or any untoward incident.

A PDP leader from Srinagar Rouf Bhat was detained by police on Tuesday as he had a day before announced that PDP workers will protest on August 5 against the abrogation of the article 370.

The BJP government had claimed that with abrogation of the article 370 peace will return to Kashmir. However, regional political parties have criticized the government for imposing curbs today in Srinagar and other towns.

A meeting was scheduled at the residence of National Conference president Farooq Abdullah, however, police has sealed the roads leading to his house, not allowing the meeting.

BJP-led government had abrogated Article 370 on August 5 last year and bifurcated the state of Jammu and Kashmir into two union territories of J&K and Ladakh. (KDC)
