SRINAGAR: Terming the Rohingya refugees issue as a big humanitarian crisis, CPI (M) leader and MLA Kulgam Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami today urged politicians not to give political color to this big human tragedy.
“The repression against lakhs of Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar is a huge human tragedy. There were expectations that Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his recent visit to that country would take up this issue with Myanmar government.
However, unfortunately, Modi didn’t take up this issue with the Myanmar leaders. Refugee issue is always a human issue and must be dealt humanly,” he said in a statement issued to press here.
“Myanmar government and extremist elements are slaughtering the people in the name of fighting terrorism. Government of India should see that in the name of fighting extremism, how innocents are being massacred in Myanmar and they should condemn these killings.
The Government of India should not make any attempts to push back or deport Rohingya who have taken shelter in different places of India, including Jammu.
In Jammu, where more than 1,200 Rohingya families, comprising of 6,000 people, have taken refuge for the last six years, some elements for partisan interests are using this human tragedy to score political points which is unfortunate.
Humanity demands that they shouldn’t be touched. This human tragedy should not be given partisan colour but instead all should come forward to help these helpless souls,” he demanded.
