Srinagar: The district authorities on Wednesday imposed restrictions in parts of this capital city to foil the traditional 8th Muharram procession from Shaheed Gunj area of the city
Curbs were imposed under section 144 Cr PC in the areas falling under the jurisdiction of Police Stations Shaheed Gunj, Batmaloo, Sher Gari, Karan Nagar, Kothibagh, Maisuma, Kral Khud, R M Bagh and Nehru Park Police Post of Srinagar, to prevent the 8th Muharram procession.
A posse of CRPF and policemen armed with sophisticated weapons and riot gear have been deployed around sensitive parts of the city, witnesses told Kashmir Reader. At many places, government forces have laid razor wire to restrict the movement of people.
Government forces are also keeping a close vigil around Lal Chowk, commercial hub of this capital city, to prevent the gathering of mourners, witnesses said.
The curbs have also led to diversion of traffic at many places.
The authorities have also ordered closure of educational institutions in the city as a ‘precautionary measure’.
8th Muharram procession used to start from Guru Bazar locality of Shaheed Gunj area of Srinagar and culminate in Dalgate. However, the Muharram processions on 8th and Ashura were banned in Srinagar from early 90’s.
