Respite from heat wave amidst above normal temperatures in Kashmir

Kupwara hottest in J&K with 34.0 degree Celsius; Weatherman predicts spells of rains, thundershowers for next 48 hours

Srinagar: Kupwara in north Kashmir was the hottest place in Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday while the Valley has witnessed a respite from the heat wave amidst the forecast of spells of light to moderate rains and thundershowers for the next 48 hours.

Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu & Kashmir, recorded a maximum temperature of 33.1 degree Celsius while Qazigund, a gateway of Kashmir has recorded a day temperature of 28.4 degree Celsius.

Pertinently, Qazigund was the only place across J&K where the heat wave was recorded on Friday.

However, Kupwara was the hottest place in J&K today with 34.0 degree Celsius while the mercury in Pahalgam, Kokernag and Gulmarg, a famous ski-resort, settled at 28.1 degree Celsius, 30.5 degree Celsius and 22.4 degree Celsius respectively.

Jammu stations however, recorded a further dip in the mercury today with Jammu recording a maximum temperature of 31.0 degree Celsius.

As per the data, Banihal has recorded a maximum temperature of 22.2 degree Celsius while Batote, Katra and Bhaderwah recorded 23.1 degree Celsius, 27.0 degree Celsius and 26.8 degree Celsius respectively.

Nonetheless, the weatherman here has predicted brief spells of rain and thundershower at few places for the next 48 hours during day time with spells of light to moderate rain and thundershower at many places of J&K towards night and early morning.

A spell of rain and thundershower are expected at scattered places of Kashmir division and many places of Jammu division on August 06 to August 08, Director Meteorological (MeT) department, Dr Mukhtar Ahmad said, adding that from August 09 to August 11, a spell of rain and thundershower at isolated places of Kashmir division and fairly widespread places of Jammu division.

Meanwhile, in its advisory, the MeT has stated that intense showers for brief period with possibility of flash floods, cloud bursts, landslides, mudslides and shooting stones over vulnerable places of J&K & heavy rainfall are expected at few places of J&K during the next three days—(KNO)
