Srinagar : Incessant rains in the last two-three days has caused damage to standing cherry crops in Kashmir.
Growers from different parts of Kashmir told that over 50 percent crop of Mishry and Jadi varieties of the cherry have got damaged by rains.
Junaid Ahmad a cherry grower from Losdanew Shopian said that the rainfall has damaged about 70 percent of the Mishry and 50 percent of Jadi varieties of cherry. The rest of the varieties were harvested.
Asif another cherry grower said that most of the Mishry and Jadi varieties are yet to be harvested and have suffered extensive damage in the last few days due to incessant rains.
He said that the fruit developed cracks as rains started during harvest period.
Similarly, growers from other parts of the Valley agreed the damage caused by rains will make them sell the fruit at low prices.
They demanded that the government must assess the damage and compensate growers.
Peer Muhammad Amin, president Fruit Mandi Shopian told incessant rains have completely changed the scenario of un-harvested varieties.
“Mishry is considered to be a good quality variety fetching good rate but rains have caused damage to it,” he said.
He said that the Mishry variety consists of around 25 percent of cherry produce.
Chief Horticulture Officer Shopian Mohammad Ramzan War, however, denied the fruit has suffered any damage saying they have no reports of damage to the cherry crop from anywhere—(KNO)
