SRINAGAR : Protests continues across Kashmir valley against the rape of Minor girl in Sumbal area of district Bandipora.
Meanwhile clashes erupted outside Bemina Degree College and Amar Singh College and SP college Srinagar after the students staged protests against the alleged rape of a three-year-old girl of Sumbal area of Bandipora district in north Kashmir last week.
An eyewitness said that the students of Amar Singh College staged massive protests inside the campus and tried to move outside. However, the police deployed in the area didn’t allow them to come outside, triggering clashes.
“The students resorted to stone pelting on the police from inside the campus. The police responded by lobbing tear gas shells inside the college campus,” said a college official. He said that massive clashes were going on but the college authorities were trying to control the situation.
Similarly, clashes erupted near Bemina Degree College between students and JK Police after the campus erupted in massive protest.
Students of the Sri Pratap Singh college, according to reports, boycotted their classes and took a protest rally from the Press Colony to their college.
Moreover, members of the Kashmir Reform Group also held a protest against the alleged rape of the three year old girl.
Students were demanding that the rapist should be punished according to the ‘Shariah Law’. Protesting students were carrying placards which read ‘We want punishment as per Shariah law’ and ‘Stone the rapist to death’.
On Monday, almost entire valley seethed in anger and protests were held which even took a violent turn. The Government has however assured that justice will be served ‘on war footing’ in the case and has appealed for calm.
However Kashmir University students also held a protest demonstration against the rape of a minor girl in Sumbal area of north Kashmir’s Bandipora district last week.
The students of various departments under the banner of Kashmir University Students Union while chanting slogans against the police demanded capital punishment to the accused person.
“We will not tolerate such heinous crimes in our society,” the students said. “We demand that there should be a death sentence for such crimes. The police should not provide refuge to the perpetrators who are involved in such barbaric crimes.”
The students claimed that the issue is being politicized and used as a vote bank. While pressing that justice should be delivered in quick time to the victim a girl student said, “We hope this time justice would be given to the victim immediately.”
The minor girl is being voiced by a number of leaders, who have expressed outrage on Twitter also.
Similarly students of Degree College Kangan staged peaceful protest demonstrations in Kangan demanding.
“We want an exemplary punishment to the culprit so that no one in future dares to commit such a heinous crime,” said Irshid Ahmad Raina one of the protesting students.
The students alleged that the authorities are trying to shield the accused by projecting him as a minor. “If he’s old enough to commit such a vile act then he is old enough to be hanged for this vicious crime. His punishment should become a deterrent for anyone who even thinks about committing such crimes in the future,” said Masrat Tabasum another protesting student.
Taking to social media, BJP leader Subramanian Swamy said, “The whole nation supports the brave educated Kashmir Valley women who came out in the streets to protest against most disgusting horrific rape of a 3-year girl. For Mehbooba to suggest that Sharia Courts should adjudicate is ridiculous.”
