Weatherman says bad weather conditions likely to begin on Tue to Thurs
Srinagar: The weatherman on Friday predicted light rains and snowfall across Kashmir from Tuesday evening, saying that the cold wave that continued in the Valley from last one week will also come to end.
According to the wire service—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), Srinagar recorded coldest night of the season with officials in the local Meteorological (MeT) department stating that the night temperature in Srinagar settled at minus 5.6 degree Celsius.
Deputy Director Meteorological (MeT) department, Dr. Mukhtar Ahmad said that there is possibility of light rains and snowfall across Kashmir from December 31 evening. “There is a forecast of bad weather conditions across Kashmir on January 01 and 02,” he said. He, however, informed that the system is not too heavy on these two dates.
Ahmad told KNO that the cold wave across Kashmir will continue till the Valley would receive fresh snowfall on December 31. He said after the fresh snowfall, the night temperature will settle close to the normal.
Pertinently, Chilai Kalan, the 40-day harshest winter period begins in Kashmir on December 21 following which the chilly nights were witnessed in Kashmir. During ‘Chillai-Kalan’, the chances of snowfall are most frequent and maximum and the temperature drops considerably.
‘Chillai-Kalan’ began on December 21 and ends on January 31, but the cold wave continues even after that in Kashmir. The 40-day period is followed by a 20-day long ‘Chillai-Khurd’ (small cold) and a 10-day long ‘Chillai-Bachha’ (baby cold). (KNO)
