POONCH: Residents of this border district on Thursday staged a protest against the supply of substandard atta (flour) to them.
Reports reaching news agency GNS said that people of Mankote, Balakote, and Mendhar on Thursday morning assembled near tehsil office and staged a protest against the supply of “rotten” flour to the government ration depos.
“We are served the atta with plastic,” the locals said. “Scores of people are suffering from different diseases due to such substandard supply of Atta and other essential items including rice.”
The locals said the food department officials are playing with their lives.
In the meantime, Telshildar Mendhar Shahzad Khan reached to the spot and after interacting with the agitating people assured them that he will look into the matter.
Tehsildar took some flour for test and upon checking, confirmed that the atta was substandard and is mixed with plastic.
The agitated people later approached SDM Rahul Yadav, SDPO Mendhar Reyaz Tantaray and raised the issue before the officers.
SDM said that Assistant Food Safety Commissioner Poonch has been appointed to investigate the matter while as Tehsildar concerned Shahzad Khan has been asked to collect the sample for FSL test.
“The guilty will be punished,” SDM said.
After assurance by the senior officers, people ended protests while demanding stern action against the culprits. (GNS)
