Mohammad Khurshid Alam leads the charge; Says NC betrayed Muslims community while playing both “Devil & Angel” in Assembly
Srinagar: J&K Peoples Democratic Party staged a massive protest on Friday against the recently passed Waqf (Amendment) Act, with the party’s General Secretary, Mohammad Khurshid Alam, emerging as the central voice of defiance. Alam delivered a scathing critique of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party and the National Conference, accusing both of systematically betraying the trust and rights of India’s Muslim population.
Alam denounced the Waqf Amendment Act as “completely unacceptable to any section of Muslims in India,” condemning both its content and the clandestine manner of its passage. “The way this bill was pushed through Parliament by BJP in the dead of night is not just undemocratic it is a deliberate act of marginalization.
We reject it unequivocally,” he declared.Turning his ire toward the BJP, Alam accused the party of consistently displaying a “reprehensible and exclusionary attitude” towards the Muslim community. However, he saved some of his sharpest words for the National Conference, calling out its silence and complicity.
“What is even more disturbing,” Alam said, “is the criminal silence of National Conference on this deeply consequential issue. The 24 crore Muslims of India looked toward Jammu & Kashmir—India’s only Muslim-majority state and home to over 60 Muslim MLAs—for a bold and principled stand. What they received instead was betrayal.”
Alam further alleged that the NC played a duplicitous role in the legislature, pretending to oppose while enabling the government’s actions. “They enacted a farce in the Assembly, playing both devil and angel, ultimately leading to a sine die adjournment. This was nothing short of a mockery of democracy and a cruel joke on the Muslim community,” he said.
In an emotionally charged moment, Alam lashed out at what he termed “appeasement politics” by NC leaders. “Adding insult to injury, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and veteran politician Farooq Abdullah casually met with Union Minister Kiren Rijiju, the very man who tabled this draconian amendment, for a morning walk. We are now told it was just a coincidence. It is not a coincidence. It is a disgrace,” he stated.Positioning the PDP as the true voice of resistance, Alam announced the party’s intent to challenge the Act through legal and democratic means. “Under the leadership of President Mehbooba Mufti, we will approach the Supreme Court.
This is not just a legal battle; it is a moral one. We will stand shoulder-to-shoulder with every voice resisting this attempt to disempower and disenfranchise the Muslim community of India.”
Party leader’s Anjum Fazili, Mohamad Iqbal Tramboo, Bashir Beigh, Ab Qayoum Bhat, Zahoor Ah Rather,Arif Laigaroo, Dr Ali Mohd,Sheikh Saba, Ali Mohd Baba, Fayaz Ahmad Bhat, Sameer ul Jameel, Gh Mohd, Bilal Ah Sofi, M Umer Dar, M Ashraf Bhat and others along with hundreds of workers were the part of the program.
