‘68,224 civil works sanctioned upto 2019-20, over 10,000 works yet to be started’

Srinagar: At least 15 per cent developmental works sanctioned upto 2019-20 in elementary level schools in Jammu and Kashmir have not been started yet, thus affecting the functioning of the government-run-schools in the Union Territory.
Besides more than three per cent civil works are also still in progress against the total number of sanctioned works.
The official figures of Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) accessed by the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) reads that a total of 68,224 civil development works were sanctioned for the elementary level schools upto 2019-20 out of which 10,084 works have not been started yet.
The documents further reveal that 3.21 per cent works are also in progress. “Of total 68,224 civil works, 55,939 have been completed, 2195 are in progress and 10,084 have not been started,” it reads.
This information was revealed by the MHRD while stating the status of pending non-recurring interventions under different components.
The MHRD has directed the concerned authorities of Jammu and Kashmir to take up these pending works on priority. The documents reveal that 10,654 works were sanctioned for primary School out of which 1087 are yet to be started, 156 are in progress and 9411 civil works have been completed.
Likewise, 1177 works were sanctioned for Upper Primary Schools, out of which 128 have not been started and 11 are in progress while 1038 works have been completed.
For additional Classrooms, at least 24,874 works were sanctioned of which only 19,598 have been completed while 3377 works are yet to be started and 1899 are still in process.
The figures further reveal that 2745 works for drinking water facilities were sanctioned out of which 2226 have been completed and 519 were not started.
The government had also sanctioned 9172 works for construction of boys toilets out of which 4624 were not started and only 4541 toilets were constructed and for the separate girls’ toilet at least 18,264 works were sanctioned out of which 18,077 were completed and 187 were not started.
The documents further reveal that 1338 other civil works were also sanctioned for construction of toilets for Children with Special Needs (CWSN), major repairs and in some other areas wherein 161 works were yet to be started and 1048 works were completed—(KNO)
