Jammu: The Jammu and Kashmir government has no dedicated budget for the beautification of Jhelum River banks, but anti-erosion measures are underway as part of flood management efforts, the PHE Minister informed the Legislative Assembly on Thursday.

Responding to a query from Congress legislator Peerzada Muhammad Sayed regarding the completion timeline for beautification work from Mehandi Kadal to Donipawa in South Kashmir, the minister clarified that the Irrigation and Flood Control Department is primarily responsible for preventing bank damage, sloughing, and breaches caused by floods.

He stated that under the Flood Management Project Phase-II (Part “A”), crate protection work is being carried out at vulnerable spots along the stretch in question. These protective measures, aimed at reinforcing weak sections of the riverbank, are expected to be completed soon, with an estimated expenditure of ₹84 lakh.

The minister did not indicate any immediate plans for riverbank beautification under the current budget. [KNT]
