Srinagar: The attack on the journalists was condemned by former chief minister Omar Abdullah took to social networking site Twitter to express himself.
“Highly unfortunate reports about journalists injured, including some with pellet injuries, while covering clashes in South Kashmir. I condemn this incident. The indiscriminate use of force, often without any accountability, will always be counterproductive,” Abdullah tweeted.
Strongly condemning the incident of assault on photo journalists during the protests in Heff Shirmal Shopian, the J&K Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) while expressing anguish, condemned the incident in strongest words.
In a statement issued today, State Congress President G.A. Mir has described the attack on photo journalists as unacceptable, deplorable, and extremely unfortunate, saying that the Journalists were performing their legitimate duties, the assault on them amounts to curbing freedom of press.
I express my serious concern over this unfortunate incident and pray for speedy recovery of the injured journalists, but at the same time, I emphasize State Government to investigate the matter to fix responsibility of this unfortunate incident, G.A. Mir said.
Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has condemned the brutal assault on photojournalists as they were discharging their professional duties in south Kashmir’s Shopian on Tuesday.
Former Minister and senior PDP leader Naeem Akhtar while wishing the injured scribes speedy recovery said in a statement that the photojournalists are on the opposite side of the crowd while covering the protests and if the pellets can hit them, they can hit anybody and it indicates a very wanton and indiscriminate use of the weapon.
Akhtar said that this violence against journalists is an attack on the fundamental right of freedom of speech and expression of the media and press in the state. He has also urged Governor Administration to take action urgently and allow scribes to perform their duties without fear. Akhtar said that the Governor administration must take exemplary action against the culprits to ensure that such incidents are not repeated in future. (VMS)
