SULTANPORA: Kashmir being famous all over the world for several reasons, be it its beautiful meadows, lakes or its political importance has many villages and towns famous for their different trades.

You may have heard about the Sopore town known as the apple town of Kashmir due to its booming apple industry. The Pampore town for Saffron. The Anantnag town famous for its willow cricket bats globally. Kashmir Patriot brings you the Golden village of Gold trade from Kashmir valley.

Yes you heard it right. Kashmir has a village Sultanpora of Pattan town, situated in the north of valley, where the people since ages are doing business of gold ornaments. The village is yet to known for its specialty in gold trade.

The inhabitants of the village are earning their bread from the business of gold. The village has followed this trade from the ancestors who were selling jewelry door to door. Following the footsteps of their forefathers the news generation has taken this trade to new heights by established showroom, shops across the valley.

While talking to this correspondent, Manzoor Aabas jeweler said that this trade has changed their life. He said most of the educated youth opt their ancestors business of gold jewelry as it is the finest sources of employment.

This village has scores of gold entrepreneurs who generated employment for others as well. The village according to villages has hundreds of showrooms and shops across valley, which is in itself a significant industry.

They said that what it lacks is the attention of the successive regimes. They said that amid major unemployment crises in the state, the village has created avenues through the trade of golden ornaments.

They believe that their ancestral trade of gold is nothing less than a blessing from God.

Worth to mention the village is so well informed about the trade that every age group form 5 to 60 years talks fluent about the idea of a gold trade.

The Golden village, Sultanpora is a Shia dominated area , nestled between apple orchards and narrow water canals has apple orchard resources as well but they preferred to pursue their ancestral trade as career and main sources of income.

Ali Mohammad Wani, a local elderly told, “We achieved a better livelihood, touched new heights with this business. Our children are never felt job insecurity as they too are interested to follow the trade. They had good know how of the trade since their childhood”.

Another gold dealer from the village, Mohammad Subhan has golden shops stretched all over Kashmir. He says that he has shops in Baramulla, Bandipora, Kupwara, Sumbal, Naidkhai and other areas.

“We never feel disappointed, when we see rising unemployment in Kashmir. We know if our children fail to get government job, we have a well built family business”, he said.

Pertinently the children of this village who are studying at different levels are dealing with this business as part time as well. “We earn sufficient for our pocket money and other miscellaneous expenses by putting some efforts in our family business,” said a postgraduate student, Zubair Ahmad Wani with an impressive smile on his face.

He adds that some of them are working as a hawker to earn some buck for their pocket.The village presents a silent look during the day as hardly any villagers remain idle at home being busiest village in trade too.

However a group of villagers while talking to this correspondent said that if the government would have promoted this trade by providing us a logistics support, enough would have been done in other unemployment hit areas of Kashmir valley.
