SRINAGAR: Indian Army has completed court-martial of Major Leetul Gogoi who was found guilty of fraternizing with a local woman in Srinagar.
Major Gogoi’s court-martial was initiated last year after the Court of Inquiry (CoI) headed by a Brigadier-rank officer found him guilty of the charge. Reports suggest he may face a reduction in seniority as a punishment.
Major Gogoi, posted with the 53 Rashtriya Rifles of (Punjab Regiment) was detained by the Jammu and Kashmir police after he tried to enter a hotel in Srinagar with a woman in May last year.
However, after Srinagar Hotel incident came to light, Army chief Bipin Rawat had said that exemplary punishment would be given to Major Gogoi if he was found guilty of “any offence”.
The court-martial was initiated against Major Gogoi’s driver Sameer Malla as well on the charge of unauthorised absence from the unit. Reports indicate that he’ll be given a “severe reprimand”.
Major Gogoi and Malla have been found guilty on two counts- first, fraternising” with a local in spite of instructions to the contrary and second, for “being away from the place of duty while in operational area.” (PTK)
