Locals allege Municipal Committee Kupwara of polluting Lolab River

KUPWARA:  In absence of a proper dumping site in Kupwara also called natural beauty Town and crown of India, Municipal Committee Kupwara and Army persons is throwing garbage into well-known river Lolab at various places in Kupwara, which not only pollutes the water body but also poses threat to the lives of dozens of people who consume the water, residents of various localities said.

“However dumping the garbage near river is extremely dangerous since it poses multiple threats directly to the people. Various areas including, Geerhatchi, Galzoo near cricket stadium and other areas consume the water of the River Lolab and the garbage pollutes this water, hence posing threat to their lives,” said the locals.

They expressed serious concern that if the practice is not stopped forthwith, this could pose serious threat to aquatic life.

“The Municipal Committee Kupwara, after collecting garbage from various parts of the town directly throws it into the river Lolab at Geerhatchi,” we have complained to the authorities many times but to no avail, the residents said.

Meanwhile, the Locals told our correspondent that Deputy Commissioner Kupwara failed to maintain beauty of Kupwara, he travels maximum two times per day from this area but can’t do anything for the society and appealed the government to look into the issue and stop the Municipal Committee from this practice.

Executive officer Municipal Committee Kupwara, Bashir Ahmad Dar said that they are preparing for scientific disposal of the garbage and are also looking for the alternate site. “The garbage dump will be soon disposed of in a scientific manner besides we are looking for alternate site too,”

“Recently we have identified 92 Kanals of land for the garbage dumping site that was a cluster type at Nutnussa for three constituency Kupwara, Handwara and Langate but later i have received orders from higher ups that we can’t dump garbage at identified land”, he said.
