SRINAGAR : The labourers working at the Lidder Valley Golf Course at Pahalgam staged a protest at the golf course demanding regularization of their services.

These workers who have been hired (on daily wage basis) to maintain the golf course for the past eight years said that they are now being threatened of replacements.

The workers gathered under the Lidder Valley Golf Course Labourers Union, said they have been doing the entire maintenance job of golf course “but for the interests of PDA, the job is always given to contractors.”

The workers are then hired by the contractors, which they said, even deducts half of their fixed wages “as tax”.

The workers requested government to regularize then, or hire then directly rather than through contractors.

“The job we are doing for the maintenance of golf course is many times appreciated by Ex-CM Mufti Mohd Syeed and he assured of looking into our demand,” a union spokesman said.

“We can maintain this golf course better than the contractors on half the amount paid to these contractors.”

“We are working from last 10 years. We are sons of soil, fully skilled educated and are having experience of how to maintain this golf course,” said, Mushtaq Ahmad, Worker.

Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Pahalgam Development Authority Mushtaq Simnani told Press Trust of Kashmir that they have forwarded a proposal for creation of posts for maintenance of golf course.

He added that “we will try to accommodate these wagers working for long.”
