Srinagar A complete shutdown was observed in Kupwara town and other adjoining parts of north Kashmir district to protest against the ghastly murder of a 9-year-old boy whose charred body was recovered adjacent to his native village on Thursday.
The boy, a student of 3rd standard, was laid to rest at 3:30 am after his body was handed over to the family by police following completion of medico-legal formalities including the post-mortem.
The half-burnt body of Umar Farooq, 9, son of Farooq Ahmad Malik, with a chopped arm, was recovered from a nallah on Thursday evening, three days after he was reported missing.
The incident has sent shockwaves across the entire district and his family and locals demand stern action against those responsible for the ghastly act.
Police had formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the death of the minor.
Meanwhile, all shops and other business establishments were closed while traffic remained off the roads in the area.
The Degree College Kupwara and Sogam were closed today.
Reports of protests were received from many areas of the frontier district including Awoora, Kupwara, Batergam, and Gulgam against the boy’s murder.
SSP Kupwara had confirmed that the body of the minor was recovered from Gushi village. He said that SIT headed by ASP Kupwara has been constituted.
“In this connection, a case FIR No. 192/2018 under section 302, 363 RPC has already been registered in police station Kupwara,” SSP Kupwara said. (GNS)
