Srinagar: Kumar Rajeev Ranjan, the Jammu and Kashmir Revenue Secretary, is set to become the first Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer to face trial in the infamous gun licence scam.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has received approval from the central government to prosecute Ranjan for alleged irregularities in granting gun licences.
The CBI is investigating the issuance of over 2.74 lakh gun licences between 2012 and 2016, when J&K was still a state, allegedly for monetary considerations. The scam is estimated to involve more than Rs 100 crore. Ranjan, who was the Deputy Commissioner of Kupwara during the period in question, was implicated in the case registered by the CBI under the Prevention of Corruption Act, 2006. The prosecution sanction was granted on November 28, 20241.
Earlier this year, Ranjan, along with his father Kripa Shankar Roy and brother Jyoti Ranjan, was among nearly two dozen people, including serving and retired government officials, gun dealers, and middlemen, against whom the Enforcement Directorate filed a complaint for prosecution on charges of money laundering.
