SRINAGAR: Shocked on hearing the news of killing of Tehreek-e-Hurriyat leader and district president Anantnag Mir Hafizullah Tuesday morning, the Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL) comprising Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Mohammad Yasin Malik has strongly condemned this “cowardly and barbaric” action by “government agencies” and called for a complete shutdown on Thursday, 22 November 2018, and peaceful protests after Friday prayers.
In a statement issued here, the leaders said Indian rulers through their local “collaborators” have always played role of eliminating political activists, who raise their voice against “this unholy and unjustified forced occupation”.
They said Mir Hafizullah was a highly educated, sensible and visionary pro-freedom leader and his sincerity, dedication and sacrifices have earned him a distinguished place and status in the state political circles especially south Kashmir.
They said in every mass uprising particularly in 2016, he played a pivotal and central role for about 5 months to sustain that movement and gave a very tough time to the government forces and finally they trapped him in a “deceitful” manner.
JRL said that Mir Hafizullah was behind the bars most of the time and was recently released after about two years.
“Authorities tried very hard to break his will and threatened him with dire consequences if he did not toe their line, when they failed to bow him down, they decided to eliminate him physically,” JRL said, adding, “For the last couple of months he received suspicious phone calls, and even was threatened and harassed, but this brave son of the soil ignored all these threats.”
“But this morning, most cunningly and brutally these champions of so-called democracy succeeded in silencing him forever. They very brazenly pumped several bullets in his chest,” they said.
The leaders paid rich tributes to Mir Hafizullah and expressed solidarity with the bereaved family and reiterated their stand “not to bow down to such gross human rights violations”.
They also appealed to the international human rights organizations and champions of democracy to wake up from the deep slumber and open their eyes and mind to check these “barbaric and extra-judicial killings under the patronage of Indian forces”.
