Govt presses in dozens of SRTC buses to ferry people within city

Srinagar: The prevailing situation that led to the halt in public traffic has forced the government to make State Roads Transport Corporation (SRTC) buses available for the people of Srinagar.

The public transport is off the roads across Kashmir since August 05, when the government in centre abrogated the special status of Jammu and Kashmir (Article 370) and bifurcated the erstwhile State into two Union Territories.

Witnesses told the wire service –Kashmir News Observer (KNO) that SRTC buses were seen plying in many routes today who were ferrying the passengers.

Sources, however, told KNO that not only for the local populace, but the SRTC buses were being used to ferry employees from their residential places to their offices.

The locals said that they were facing hardships in absence of the public transport from last over two months, adding that employing the SRTC buses for the local populace here have eased the burden of Kashmiris.

Locals hailed the step and stated that this decision should have been taken long ago, adding that the limited number of SRTC buses incorporated couldn’t provide sigh of relief to the people but it has eased the burden of people to large extend.

Pertinently, the SRTC buses were not being used to ferry passengers in Srinagar district. It was for the first time, that these buses were being used to ferry passengers in Srinagar amidst the spontaneous shutdown in Kashmir to protest against the repealing of Article 370. The business establishments including the shops remained closed for the 76th straight day in Kashmir. (KNO)
