In a first, live robotic surgery relayed from Chennai to GMC

Srinagar : The three-day workshop-cum conference has started at GMC Srinagar where for the very first time, there shall be a relay of live robotic surgery from Chennai.

A senior doctor at the Government Medical College Srinagar told that the GMC’s Department of General and Minimal Access Surgery is conducting a three-day international workshop at the GMC auditorium that started on Thursday and will conclude on Saturday.

He said there will be a live operative workshop on June 1 and 2. “Laparoscopic surgical procedure and advanced urological procedures are being demonstrated live by experts from within and outside the country,” he said.

For the first time in the history of Jammu and Kashmir and GMC Srinagar, there will be a relay of Advanced Robotic Surgery from Kochi Chennai. It shall prove to be a boon for the postgraduates and young surgeons to watch the innovative surgical skills of the experts and shall provide an opportunity for them to deliberate on confounding clinical issues, the doctor said.

Prof Mufti Mahmood Ahmad, Head of Department, General and Minimal Access Surgery GMC Srinagar, told KNO that this rich academic programme has been formulated for the benefit of young surgeons, postgraduate students and DNB/MCH students of various academic institutions.

The organising committee comprises Prof Mufti Mahmood HOD surgery GMC Srinagar, Prof Iqbal Saleem, Prof Mohd Saleem Wani, Prof Arif Hamid and Dr Syed Javed Qadri.

Prof Ahmad said the advanced urological procedures are being conducted in OT 1 of SMHS hospital whereas Minimal Access Procedures of Surgery are being relayed from OT 2 to the specialty targeted audience in Hall A and Hall B.

He said the live operative workshop will continue for two days on June 1 and 2, while on June 3, there shall be guest lectures, podium presentations, video presentations and panel discussions on various confounding clinical issues.

The invited faculty includes experts from within and outside the country and it is aimed at projecting the high quality of urological work done in the Department of Surgery at GMC Srinagar, the doctor said, adding it will highlight various procedures of advanced minimal access surgery that have been widely acknowledged resulting in the establishment of Department of Surgery GMC Srinagar as the Centre for fellowship in minimal access surgery (FNB-MAS) by National Board Medical Education.

More than 350 delegates have registered for the event and the organisers have made elaborate arrangements for their stay and hospitality, he said.

The event is scheduled to be inaugurated by Secretary Health & Medical Education, Government of J&K, Bupinder Kumar on Friday, June 2, at 03.30 pm in the GMC auditorium—(KNO)
