Srinagar: The J&K Hoteliers’ Club felicitated ultramarathon runner Hamid Aziz, being the first athlete to run a distance of 200 km from Kargil to Srinagar in subzero temperature at an altitude of 11,578 ft.
He covered two regions of the state and became the first marathon runner to cover 200 km in 2 days hours, setting a state record.
The athlete was presented a memento by the club on Friday evening in the presence of Adviser to Governor Khurshid Ganai, Srinagar Deputy Commissioner Syed Abid Rashid and J&K Hoteliers’ Club chairman Mushtaq Chaya.
‘Fashion Fiesta’ founder Adnan Shah presented a cheque of Rs 5,000 to Hamid on the occasion.
The 24-year-old athlete from the Hawal area in old city said his ultimate goal was to run from Kashmir to Kanyakumari. “I will attempt to run 500 km in a week from J&K to Punjab. I will gradually increase the ultramarathon distance in coming years till I finish my first major goal of running from Kashmir to Kanyakumari, which I will attempt in 60 days,” Hamid added.
Hamid had also completed a 110-km run from Srinagar to Baltal via Sonmarg in Ganderbal district in October last year. He had earlier shot to fame after covering a 60-km run alongside Australian marathon runner Pat Farmer in a single day in March last year.
Hamid is associated with J&K Adventure Sports Club which organised the 200 km run for him. (KNS)
