Ensure availability of motor boats, shikaras ready for rescue purpose during floods: Govt to Director Tourism, LAWDA

Srinagar,: The government has asked director tourism, Lakes and Waterways Development Authority (LAWDA) and security forces of Disaster Management to ensure availability of motor boats and Shikaras for the rescue purpose during the floods other emergency situations.

The directions were passed by Divisional Commissioner Kashmir P K Pole in a meeting held last week.

The divisional administration has directed all Deputy Commissioners, all senior superintendents of police, director tourism, VC LAWDA to ensure availability of ample numbers of Shikaras and boats in case of floods.

“Moreover, State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) shall also ensure availability of boats as well for the rescue purpose during the floods,” the divisional administration said.

The Divisional administration in the instructions passed includes conduct of mock drills, in which the chair directed that mock drills shall be conducted immediately to gear up the staff deployed for the flood duty and create awareness among the general public.

“The staff deployed shall be made aware of the activities to be carried out during any flood situation and the general public shall be taken on board during the drill. The mock drills shall be conducted under the supervision of the Additional Commissioner of the concerned districts,” the directions read.

Stating the instruction of audit of river and Nallah banks, the administration directed Irrigation and Flood Control (I&FC) department to conduct the extensive audit of the river and Nallah banks in Srinagar city and Kashmir valley immediately.

“Immediate measures and repairs of vulnerable spots, weak embankments of river, Nallahs shall be done to avoid any breach on the embankments,” it reads.

The directions further reads that the I&FC Department Kashmir shall ensure adequate procurement and availability of flood mitigation resources like geo-bags, filled sand bags etc well before the start of the rainy season.

The Divisional administration on while highlighting the de-silting issues of Flood basins and drains said that that SMC and ULB shall immediately take up the de-silting process of the choked drains in Srinagar city and towns in Kashmir valley.

“Besides, I&FC shall also immediately start the process of de-silting of flood basins and streams and Canals in the Kashmir valley,” it reads—(KNO)
