Poonch : Members of a special police team in Poonch Thursday resorted to aerial firing after villagers attacked them during a raid in connection with drug peddling.
The incident took place in Gursai Nallah village of Poonch’s Mendhar sub division following which the protests erupted in the area.
Official sources told KNO that a team of police from Poonch comprising of Police personnel in civies was sent for a special operation in Gursai Nallah area falling under Gursai Police Station in Mendhar.
However, sources said after overpowering the suspected person, police personnel were trying to shift him to their vehicles but a large number of villagers assembled on the spot following which a scuffle broke out between the police and locals.
“Villagers attacked police personnel and also managed to get the suspected accused free from the police team,” sources said.
They added during the incident, police personnel resorted to aerial firing and escaped from the spot to save themselves from the clutches of villagers.
Later, protests broke out in the area and villagers alleged that police harassed them.
The protesters were pacified by SDPO Mendhar and other officers who reached on the spot.
Meanwhile, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Poonch, Ramesh Angral told KNO that a team of police went in the area and arrested a person alongwith drugs when villagers attacked them and got the accused escape from the spot.
SSP added that to save their lives from villagers, police personnel had to fire in air in self defence. “We have taken cognizance in the matter,” SSP added.(KNO)
