Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Monday cautioned against singling out a particular community, stating that such actions would only fuel tensions.

Addressing the media amid ongoing protests against the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, Abdullah defended the role of the Waqf Board in managing charitable activities within the Muslim community.

“Every religion engages in charitable activities. For Muslims, these are carried out through the Waqf. However, when only one community is targeted, it naturally leads to unrest,” Abdullah remarked.

The Waqf (Amendment) Bill has sparked widespread protests, with critics alleging that it unfairly interferes in religious and charitable affairs. Various organizations have voiced concerns over the government’s intentions, warning that any attempt to alter Waqf properties or restrict their use could have serious repercussions.

While the government maintains that the amendments aim to improve transparency and efficiency, the opposition sees them as an infringement on religious autonomy. The protests are expected to intensify in the coming days as stakeholders continue to press for a review of the bill. [KNT]
