Srinagar: Police on Sunday issued the following statement about the Batamaloo gunfight saying that government forces jointly launched searches in Batamaloo area in District Srinagar, based on credible leads about the presence of militants in the area.
A spokesperson in a statement said: “while the searches in the area were going on, militants hiding in a house which had a proper hideout for them fired indiscriminately on the government forces.”
“In the initial burst of fire, three jawans sustained injuries and were evacuated to the hospital for medical attention. However one of them identified as Sgct Parvaiz succumbed to his injuries,” the spokesman said.

“Government forces exercised maximum restraint in retaliation considering the residential population and other civil establishments around the area,” he said.
“A massive search operation is underway in the area as it is understood that in the exchange of fire militant are also injured,” the spokesman said.
However incriminating material was recovered from the site of encounter. Besides two accomplices of the militants have been detained, he added.
A spokesperson said that Police has registered a case and investigation has been initiated in the instant matter.
