Baramulla LS polls: In a first, voters at Palhallan, Watergam known for boycott, turn up at polling booths

Baramulla: Majority of voters turned up at the polling booths on Monday in Palhalan and Watergam areas of north Kashmir’s Baramulla district for the first time after boycotting the elections for years together.

The two areas were among the locations where the boycott factor has always prevailed in the past. But, the situation in the fifth phase of the Lok Sabha elections for Baramulla parliamentary constituency was different from the past as nearly 60 per cent of votes were polled at the twin places till 05:15 PM today.

At the two polling stations of Watergam where the team of the reached nearly 60 per cent of votes were polled till 05:00 PM.

As per the details shared by officials at polling booth number 53 Watergam-A, a total of 310 votes including 162 males and 147 females, out of 552 were polled till 4:50 PM while at polling booth number 53 Watergam-C, a total of 364 votes (197 males and 164 females) were cast out of 651 till 05:02 PM.

The area according to the locals has always preferred to boycott the polls, but this time, the people have understood that wasting votes is tantamount to ignoring their rights. “We have voted today to end the boycott factor and ensure that the deserving candidate wins,” Junaid Ahmad, a voter, said outside the polling booth.

Similarly in Palhalan, the stone pelting and complete boycott was usually marking the poll day in the area. However, for the first time, the elections have concluded peacefully at the polling booth part number 21, Palhalan G.

As per the details shared by the officials, out of the total 1063 votes, 530 (293 males and 237 females) were polled till 05:15 PM.

A lady voter, present at the polling booth stated that the voters were seen in the large queues throughout the day for the first time at this polling booth. “This area has always sided with the boycott, but for the first time, people including the youth have turned up to cast their ballots,” she said—(KNO)
