Bandipora: The Bandipora Municipal council is illegally dumping solid waste material in cricket stadium in Nasoou area, triggering widespread resentment among the locals and sports lovers.
Locals told that the council has now taken over the cricket stadium and is dumping the solid waste material there despite having its own facility spread over five kanals of land for the same.
“Why government is shutting eyes towards violation of law by its own agency? Who will be responsible if it causes health problem in the area?” locals asked.
They said that hundreds of cricket tournaments were played in this stadium which was a matter of happiness for the local youth’s but these days the ground is occupied by heaps of dirt and filth.
“The council was first dumping garbage on the banks of the Wular Lake and now they have turned to our playground and dumping garbage there,” they said.
The locals also said that despite protesting against their act many times, the concerned department is unmoved.
“We can’t describe how foul it smells here. We are worried that an epidemic will spread here if the authorities shut eyes towards the problem,” said Aqib Ahmad a local resident who has now stopped going to Zulwan stadium.
He said that the dumping of garbage over such area in open is not only threat to human life but may seriously harm the aquatic life of Wular lake.
Meanwhile, residents have appealed the Deputy Commissioner Bandipora Owais Ahamad to personally look into the matter so that people can heave a sigh of relief.
An official of MC Bandipora when contacted told KNO that they did not occupy the playing field. “We are also trying to save this play field as well as the Wular Lake from this mess” he said—(KNO)
