SRINAGAR: The arrest of two post-graduate students triggered strong protest at the central university of Kashmir (CUK) Nowgam campus today.
Scores of students of CUK Nowgam assembled in the campus this morning and staged a protest against the arrest of two political science students Suhail Ahmad Dar and Mohammad Ismail Gaine by government forces in a night raid on Friday.
Reports said that at around 2am a contingent of police and army raided their rented room in Nowgam Chowk.
“They were both beaten up while being taken away. As trains used to be often suspended they both had taken a rented accommodation. They were regular students at the university”.
The two third semester students were picked up by government forces from their rented accommodation in Nowgam locality of the city outskirts, they said.
Both the students hail from Shopian district of south Kashmir.
PRO, central university of Kashmir Speaking to News agency Press Trust of Kashmir said, “Two students of our university have been arrested from their rooms in Nowgam. We don’t reason behind the arrests, matter have been taken with higher authority”.
However As per the university officials, they boycotted their classes today and gathered to hold a peaceful protest regarding the detainment of their mates. (PTK)
