Amar Singh College Srinagar organises Inter College Debate on ‘The Gandhian Philosophy is far More Relevant to Contemporary India than it was Before

The Debates & Seminars Committee Amar Singh College Srinagar in collaboration with territorial Army organized 01 day inter college debate competition on ‘The Gandhian Philosophy is far more relevant to contemporary India than it was before’ on 16-08-2022.
The chief guest of the event was Worthy Vice Chancellor, Cluster University Srinagar Prof (Dr.) Qayyum Husain and the guests of honor for the event were Colonel Luve and Lieutenant Colonel Sanjeev Baliyan. The patron for the event was Principal Amar Singh College Srinagar.
The programme commenced with the welcome address delivered by Prof Bashir Ahmad, Principal Amar Singh College, Srinagar who illuminated the audience about the principles of Gandhian Philosophy like simple living and High thinking, Ahimsa and decentralization of power.
He also stressed the fact that there is intense need in our times to follow the Gandhian Philosophy.
The welcome address was followed by patriotic song performed by group of students from department of Music, Amar Singh College.
Immediately after the patriotic song, reverend Professor Qayyum Husain was invited to deliver his presidential address. Prof. Qayyum Husain emphasized that Gandhiji was a selfless man who put nation before himself. He also lauded Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Azadi ka Amrut Mahotsav initiative.
Presidential address was followed by the special lecture by Colonel Luve. He pronounced that best practitioners of Non-Violence are men in Uniform. He also contended that the sixty percent of Indian population is young and Gandhi’s idea of Ahimsa can go a long way in grooming them into better citizens. He also emphasized that what violence cannot deliver can be delivered by the Non-Violence. Before the commencement of the debate, the patron of the event Prof Bashir Ahmad Rather felicitated the Chief guest and the Guest of Honour.
Ten students from the constituent colleges of Cluster University participated in the debate competition the participants deliberated upon various aspects of Gandhian philosophy and its relevance in contemporary times. There were arguments both for and against the said said topic were the students shared their views about the contemporary relevance of the gandhian principles.
Various aspects of Gandhian philosophy like trusteeship, sustainability truth and non-violence, inter-faith harmony, Sarvodaya etc. were deliberated upon. The Gandhian principle of non-violence was also criticized by those who spoke against the motion about how it is inadequate to deal with the hostile Indian neighborhood. The students also touched upon the nuclear question and how Gandhian philosophy of non-violence proves inadequate in addressing the same.
The 3rd prize in the debating competition was awarded to Kamran Farooq from Amar Singh College Srinagar. Aliya Ali from AAA Memorial college bagged the 2nd prize and the first prize was given to Bisma Bashir AAA Memorial College.
The inaugural of the event was moderated by Prof. Heena Amin, Convenor Debates/Seminars/Workshop committee and the debate competition was moderated by Fahad Fayaz and Syed Darkhsan Anjum, both students of A S College. Prof. Asmat Wahid, Prof. Mujahid Ahmad and Lt. Colonel Sanjeev Baliyan were the judges for the debate competition. The event concluded with the formal vote of thanks by Dr. Zubzir Nazeer, head department of Public Administration.
