‘People still need to go outside for treatment, face long waiting times for tests’
Srinagar: Minister for Health and Medical Education, Sakina Itoo on Thursday said the government is committed to implementing comprehensive healthcare reforms in Jammu and Kashmir to improve medical services for residents across the region.Speaking to reporters in Hazratbal here after reviewing the functioning of various hospitals, Itoo said the National Conference (NC) government is focused on upgrading the healthcare sector in Jammu and Kashmir to provide better facilities for the people.”Modernisation of hospitals, the integration of advanced medical technologies and the availability of specialist doctors are crucial to delivering quality healthcare,” she said, adding that many challenges still exist.The minister added, “Despite our efforts, many people still have to travel outside J&K for specialised treatments and they often face long waiting times—sometimes for months—just to undergo essential diagnostic tests.” These delays, Itoo said, are particularly concerning for patients with life-threatening conditions, where timely diagnosis and treatment are critical.”Even smaller hospitals are witnessing a surge in patient numbers,” she said. “As a result, there is a pressing need to upgrade hospital infrastructure and ensure the adequate availability of doctors and paramedical staff. This will help reduce patient suffering and improve overall healthcare delivery.”Sakina said she has directed the health department to publish a list of available tests along with their charges so that patients can have clear information in advance about the services and their costs.”Access to quality healthcare is a fundamental right of every citizen. We must work collectively to ensure that this right is fulfilled for all residents of Jammu and Kashmir,” the minister said—(KNO)
