Pulwama mourns JeM militants killing, train service remains suspended

SRINAGAR: A shutdown and protests continued for the second consecutive day today in Shopian against the killing of six persons, four of them civilians in the south Kashmir district on Sunday evening.

All shops, business establishments, government and private offices remained closed in south Kashmir parts including Shopian and its adjoining parts.

The public transport was off the roads in all these areas, reports said.

They said, however, private cars were plying on most of the roads in the civil lines area of the city and in north Kashmir.

A shutdown was also observed in neighbouring Pulwama district and it shut to ‘mourn’ the killing of Jaish-e-Mohammad top commander Mufti Waqas who was killed in Letpora, Awantipora on Monday evening in a brief gunfight.

Reports of minor clashes were received from Memander, near DC office and near Mini Secretariat in Shopian.

Meanwhile, people at Pahnoo staged a strong protest demonstration demanding the removal of an army camp in the village.

As a precautionary government has closed all the schools and colleges in Kashmir Valley while Kashmir University, JKBOSE and JKPSC postponed all exams scheduled till March 7.

Train service also remained suspended today and internet remained snapped in twin districts of Shopian and Pulwama while as themobile internet which was reduced yesterday morning has been restored to high speed elsewhere in Kashmir Valley.

On Sunday evening four civilians and two militants were killed in army firing at Pahnoo village in Shopian district.

While the locals said the civilians were killed in cold blood, the army said they retaliated after their vehicle was fired at by the militants.

An official said that three civilians were accompanying a militant who fired at them from a car when they were signaled to stop at a checkpoint. Bodies of fourth civilian and another militant were found later. (GNS)
