Ganderbal: The pollen from Russian poplar trees here has impacted the health condition of residents living in several areas in Central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district.
The residential areas include Ganderbal, Nagbal, Gund, Cherwan, Hayan, Palpora, Ninhama and Kangan
According to local residents, the pollen from these poplar trees is triggering significant respiratory problems, including allergies and respiratory distress.
Despite pleas, the authorities have not taken steps to cut these trees, exacerbating the situation, they said.
Muhammad Sahil, a resident, emphasized the dire impact on individuals with allergies and pre-existing respiratory conditions, especially during the spring season. He urged the administration to promptly remove the poplars and replace them with non-harmful alternatives.
Advocate Sajad Farooq pointed out the authorities’ failure to act despite legal directives dating back to 2015, which mandated the removal of Russian poplar trees. He emphasized the urgent need for action to mitigate the public health crisis.
A health expert, Dr Shahid highlighted that pollen allergies are a leading cause of respiratory issues during the pollination season. Despite existing guidelines, there has been little progress in addressing the issue, he said.
Meanwhile, the residents here have demanded immediate intervention to remove the trees and replace them with non-allergenic options to alleviate the suffering of the local population—(KNO)
