SRINAGAR: Locals from different areas of Sopore town in North Kashmir’s Baramulla district Monday staged a massive protest against Urban Local Bodies Department alleging that under Housing for All Scheme, they were sidelined even though every family paid Rs 1000 to the Department.

Housing for All Scheme also known as Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana is an initiative by Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India in which affordable housing will be provided to the urban poor.

The protesters including old women, who assembled here in Press Enclave Srinagar alleged that Urban Local Bodies minted money from them under this scheme but provided no benefits to them.

“The officials demanded Rs 1000 per family with the promise that we will avail benefits under this scheme. But till date we got nothing. When we demand our money back, they refuse to do. It is a big scam as they collected money from hundreds of households,” the protesters told news agency CNS.

They appealed anti-graft bodies to initiate a probe into this scam as well as also initiate probe into the bungling under Swach Bharat Mission.

They also alleged that various Patwaris in the town looted state exchequer in the name of flood relief from 2014 onwards. (CNS)
