Ganderbal : The increasing numbers of stray dogs in this central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district have become a cause of grave concern for the people who are not able to move around freely.

The locals of several villages in Ganderbal, especially Kangan, told  that the problem has assumed a serious dimension with concerned authorities turning a deaf ear to the public outcry.

They said a pack of dogs can be seen on the prowl on streets and their increasing number is posing a grave threat to their lives. “The people, especially children, elders and women are scared to move out,” Shahid, a local of Arampora, said.

The people of the district have alleged that the steep rise in canine population was due to their transportation from urban areas during night hours. They have appealed to the concerned authorities to tackle the menace at the earliest.

Scores of dogs are seen on the prowl in the busy markets of Kangan, Prang, Wussan, Arampora, Nunner, Wayil, Lar, Watlar and the Ganderbal town. The locals of these areas accused the authorities of doing nothing to control the menace.

“Our school-going children are vulnerable to attacks by stray dogs. We have to accompany them till they board the school bus,” a local from the main town Ganderbal said.

Stray dogs have injured scores of sheep and other cattle in the last few months, said another local Kangan.

They have appealed to the municipal authorities to take the matter seriously—(KNO)
