Substandard material leads to road collapse in Bandipora village, allege locals

Bandipora : The villagers of Vewan in north Kashmir’s Bandipora district have been pushed back to the stone age after the collapse of the road built to connect the village to the main town of Bandipora, only four years after it was constructed.

the road was expected to bring relief to the villagers who had previously faced difficulties due to the lack of road connectivity. “Despite the government spending crores of rupees on the project, the road’s collapse has left the villagers furious, with many alleging the use of substandard material in its construction and not following proper engineering models,” they said. “Its construction was carried out by a private contractor who was accused of using substandard material in the construction of the road, leading to its collapse.”

A group of locals, while talking to  claimed that the contractor used substandard material besides not taking any technical support from engineers, and several locals had forecasted that the road couldn’t stand the inclement weather as no protection walls were constructed to make the road stronger.

They also expressed their anger through protests aimed at the government and the contractor, seeking accountability for the incident. The locals demanded immediate action against those responsible for the mishap, hoping to prevent such failures from happening again in the future.

Following the collapse of the road, a team of experts has been dispatched to the site to conduct an investigation into the cause of the collapse and provide a report

The officials from the PMGSY department have said that they will work on the maintenance of the road as soon as possible, given that it has been damaged due to a landslide in the area—(KNO)
