541 votes cast out of 941. Khazir Mohammad elected as president
Sopore : For the first time in history, the Fishermen community in north Kashmir’s Sopore town held elections, where Khazir Mohammad Punchoo was elected as the president of the community.
The election was conducted in a free, fair, peaceful and transparent manner by the members of the Election Committee including Poll observers along with Jammu and Kashmir Police.
As per the details available out of total 941 votes, 451 votes were polled in which Khazir Mohammad Punchoo got 341 and Ghulam Hassan Dar, 100.
The newly elected president assured the associated people that he will work tirelessly to solve the different problems faced by them.
“We were facing immense issues and the different schemes from the government were not reaching to them, which as per him was due to no representation,” he said.
A community member said: “The election was conducted for the first time, I’m 58-years-old and I have never ever witnessed this before.”
He, however, said that the earlier heads were only selected by a few of the members but it was for the first time people associated with it from Watlab to Seer participated in the election process.
