Sopore : The authorities in the Sopore town of north Kashmir’s Baramulla district have warned the shopkeepers and street vendors of strict action for encroaching on the roads and footpaths and also for installing their carts near educational institutions.

President Municipal Council Sopore, Musarat Kar  said that they received a number of complaints against shopkeepers and street vendors who have illegally encroached on the footpaths and roads across the town. He said a drive was conducted during which the encroachment was removed to allow smooth traffic movement.

“We imposed fines and will go for the same in the future,” Musarat said, adding that the drive shall continue on a routine basis as the town is witnessing a rush in view of Eid.

The locals including employees and students complained that they have to face immense hardships due to the presence of vendors on roadsides and footpaths. They said there is no space for pedestrians to walk as most of the footpaths are taken by vendors and shopkeepers while the common people are forced to walk on the roads.

On exorbitant rates of essential commodities in the market, the MC president said they along with the Revenue and F&CS officials are continuously conducting drives and monitoring it closely. She urged the people to cooperate with the teams and inform them of the same so that action is taken against the violators—(KNO)
