Uri (Baramulla): Several places in Uri including the local bus stand area and nallah are slowly turning into garbage sites with the piling of mounds of trash for over a considerable period of time now.
A local delegation told GNS that the foul smell emanating from the garbage and filth is causing a huge inconvenience to the inhabitants. “It gets difficult for the vehicle boarders and other commoners alike to visit the bus stand”, they said adding “On the other hand the nallahs are also presenting a dismal state of affairs.”
Alleging the Municipal Committee of a lackadaisical approach towards the issue, the delegation members said that despite taking the issue with them on several occasions, the Committee officials have hardly bothered to look into it.
A nallah which passes through Uri Main Market and falling in proximity to Jamia Masjid Uri, Government Girls Middle School, Government Girls Higher Secondary School, Government Boys Higher Secondary School, Animal Husbandry Department office beside dozens of shops is filled with garbage for a long time now, a delegation member said adding With the Municipal Committee failing to clean up the nallah, the garbage mounds are only increasing with the passage of each day.
“The MCU should clean up all the nallah and beautify the area as many educational institutes are close to it,” he said.
A shopkeeper said that garbage accumulated in a pit near the office of Fire & Emergency services in Uri Main Market has become a nuisance for shopkeepers.
Similar complaints were received from inhabitants of Ward number 6, 8 and 9 who decried the carelessness of Municipal Committee vis-à-vis cleaning of dirt and garbage from the respective wards.
When contacted, Executive officer Municipal Committee Uri Farhana Showkat said that they were falling short of manpower which caused the delay in the removal of the garbage from the town areas. “We will be conducting a cleanliness drive to clear the garbage from the specified sites in the town”, the official said.
