Sopore: The residents of Sopore town in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district are up in arms against the concerned authorities for failing to make streetlights functional for the last five years.
As per the details available that 115 street lights were installed in the entire town five years ago, however, the concerned authorities failed to make them functional.
Locals said that not only are the newly installed lights are defunct but the old street lights too were not working.
They said that they have several times brought the issue to the notice of concerned officials but to no avail.
The residents also said that several incidents of theft have taken place in the town and the main market as the burglars take advantage of the darkness due to defunct streetlights in the town.
They said that the town looks like a “ghost town” after 5 pm as none of the streetlights installed here is functional.
They appealed to the higher authorities to look into the matter and investigate it as to why these lights are not functional even after spending lakhs of funds.
When contacted, executive officer, municipal council Sopore, Sameer Jan told KNO that they have issued a tender and work would be started soon to make these lights functional.
