2 secretaries look after 15 departments each, Centre to spend Rs 1100 crore for construction of civil secretariat, Raj Niwas, other infrastructure in UT
Srinagar: A parliamentary panel has recommended to the Union Home Ministry to expedite the process of setting up of new administrative institutions and related-infrastructures in the Union Territory of Ladakh.
According to wire service—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), in its report, the panel headed by Anand Sharma of Congress has observed that a strong and effective administration is required for accelerating the pace of development in the newly carved UT of Ladakh.
“MHA should expedite the process of setting up of new administrative institutions and related infrastructures (in Ladakh UT),” the panel has recommended.
The panel has made the recommendation after Lok Sabha member from Ladakh pushed for increasing strength of secretary-level officer in the newly created UT. “The Member of the Parliament of the UT of Ladakh stated that there are only two Secretaries in Ladakh, looking after fifteen departments each. Therefore, there is a need for more Secretary level officers in the UT of Ladakh,” reads the report.
As per the report, a major share of Rs 5958 crore budget approved for the UT would be spend for infrastructure development of new UT. The major projects would be construction of Secretariat, residential building for the officers and staff, construction of Rajniwas, repair and maintenance of the existing infrastructure.
It states that Rs 1100 crore would be spent on infrastructure development including civil secretariat, roads & buildings and Kargil Airport. Ladakh was carved out as Union Territory from the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir on August 5 when the parliament approved the J&K Reorganization Act which partitioned the erstwhile state into two UTs. The region started functioning as a separate territorial entity from October 31 when the Re-organization law came into force—(KNO)
