Srinagar: With massive changes on the political turf of Jammu and Kashmir after the Government of India revoked the semi-autonomous status of this Himalayan state on August 5, the Jammu and Kashmir People’s Movement (JKPM) is likely to disappear on the political turf of the region.
The JKPM was launched by Shah Faesal, a topper of the 2009 UPSC civil services exams from Kashmir, after he resigned from the elite civil services (IAS).
Faesal joined mainstream politics in January, two months later, he launched his own political party and within weeks several prominent faces joined his party.
Sources told wire service—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) that Faesal would likely to announce his retirement from active politics after his release from the detention. “Shah Faesal is disappointed with mainstream politics after the August 5 decision by GoI and the New Delhi’s behavior towards Kashmir.
Prominent student leader and former JNU student vice-president Sheila Rashid, Faesal’s ally and former student leader of the JNU also announced to end her political career after New Delhi’s maltreatment to the mainstream politicians.
Shah Faesal was stopped from flying out of the country at the Delhi airport on August 14 and sent back to Srinagar, where he was placed under preventive detention.
Rashid also said the decision was in protest against the Centre’s “current actions” in Kashmir.
She added: “I cannot be a party to legitimizing the brutal suppression of people”.
Faesal and Rashid were the two important pillars of the JKPM, without whom the structure of JKPM was incomplete.
A JKPM party functionary and close of Faesal also confirmed the development, however, he feigned ignorance about the Faesal’s future plans and the party’s role in the crucial times to come. Meanwhile, Uzair Ronga, a key party functionary, was stopped at the airport after he tried to flee the erstwhile State but was disallowed and pushed back (KNO).
