Distressed families allege cops shielding accused

KUPWARA: The families of three missing persons from north Kashmir’s Kupwara district continue to be in a state of shock as the whereabouts of their bread-earners are not known for the past over two years.

The family members of the missing persons—Ghulam Jeelani Khatana, Mir Hussain Khatana and Ali Muhammad Sheikh who are missing since November 17 2015 after they were taken along by Manzoor Ahmad of 160 Battalion Territorial Army The accused Army soldier Manzoor Ahmad is the main culprit according by family members of the disappeared.

In November last year, Manzoor reportedly met the trio in Kralpora area and, according to their family members, promised a job to them and took them along. When they didn’t return home that evening, the anguished families tried to reach them on mobile phones, but in vain.

After a week-long wait, the families grew suspicious and approached the Army unit of the accused soldier to know the whereabouts of their family heads. However, the Army distanced itself from the incident.

On November 28, they approached a court which directed police to file a case. The TA man Manzoor Ahmad was soon arrested and investigation started. But it brought no good news for the families of the missing trio. The shattered families have now pinned their hopes on the judiciary for justice.
