SRINAGAR: A beautiful tourist destination of Sonamarg road is expected to be thrown open for vehicular traffic within the next few days.
Though the date for the reopening of the highway is yet to be officially announced, it is expected that it would be thrown open by first week of April and is depending upon the weather conditions.
The Border Roads Organisation (BRO), which is responsible for clearance of the road up to the Zero Point in Zojila from Gagengeer in Ganderbal district, has been cleared the road for one way traffic from Sonamarg market owing pleasant weather.
“We have crossed the main market of Sonamarg and reaching of most dangerous and cold place of Zero point in Zojila is their next target, although 7 feet’s of heavy snow accumulated on beyond Sonamarg highway, however more efforts were on to make the highway clear for traffic up to Sonamarg tourist destination” BRO official told Kashmir Patriot.
Last year, the highway up to Sonamarg was thrown open in the last week of March while up to Leh in 30 April,
However, due to heavy snowfall in Zojila area this year the snow clearance operation may take more time to facilitate re-opening of this Srinagar-Leh highway this year.
Due to pleasant weather in Kashmir scores of tourists who wish to visit Sonamarg return back as the road beyond Gagenger, a village located few kilometers ahead of Sonamarg, remains closed.
The authorities have erected barricades on Srinagar-Sonamarg road near Gagengeer a hilly area of Ganderbal to stop any traffic moment on the road.
